A Study Permit is an official document issued by Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada that allows foreign nationals to study at designated learning institutions (DLIs) in Canada. If you're an international student planning to study in Canada, it's important to carefully research and plan ahead for important factors such as intake dates, application deadlines, visa processing times, and English language requirements. In general, most foreign nationals will require a valid study permit in order to legally study in Canada.

New Study Permit

Obtaining a study permit involves submitting an application, providing necessary documentation, and meeting eligibility requirements.
As an international student with a study permit, you must:

Always be enrolled at a designated learning institution
Make progress toward finishing your study program
Respect the conditions listed on your study permit
Stop studying if you no longer meet the requirements
Leave Canada when your permit expires

International students who hold a valid study permit may be eligible to work on-campus or off-campus while studying, subject to specific requirements and restrictions outlined by the Canadian government. Additionally, spouses and dependent children of international students may also be eligible to apply for their own Canadian visas or permits. It is important to check with the relevant authorities for eligibility criteria and application requirements.

Eligibility

Letter of Acceptance from Canadian Designated Learning Institution
Conditional Letter of Acceptance (Prerequisite course)- (If Applicable)
Co-op letter (if need to apply for a co-op work permit at the same time)

  • Your tuition fees
  • Living expenses for yourself and any family members who come with you to Canada
  • Return transportation for yourself and any family members who come with you to Canada

Extensive supporting documentation must be submitted with all study permit applications, such as:
  • Acceptance letter from a Designated Learning Institution (DLI)
  • Proof of financial support for tuition fees, living expenses, and return transportation
  • Educational transcripts and diplomas
  • Language test results (e.g. IELTS, TOEFL)
  • Study plan outlining a program of study and future career goals
  • Any additional documents required by IRCC
Study Permit Extension

A valid study permit is a mandatory document for international students pursuing studies in Canada. It is issued by IRCC for a specified period, and the student is expected to complete their studies within that stipulated time. However, there may be circumstances where a student needs more time to complete their studies, wants to change their program, or take up another program after completing their current one. In such cases, the student must apply for an extension of their study permit.

It is recommended to apply for an extension more than 30 days before your current study permit expires. If the application is submitted before this date, the student will be authorized to remain in Canada as a student through implied status until a decision is made on the extension application, provided the conditions of their permit have not changed. However, if the conditions of the permit have changed, then the foreign national does not have implied status and must wait until they receive a decision on their application.

It is important to note that a valid study permit is necessary to renew your Social Insurance Number (SIN) or health insurance. Waiting until there are only 30 days left to renew these documents may cause problems, as the study permit will be expiring.
