Canada is undoubtedly one of the best destinations to pursue higher education, attracting students from all corners of the world. Not only do international students gain valuable education credentials, but they also receive a high-quality education at comparatively affordable tuition fees compared to other countries. If you are considering applying to a Canadian university or college, there are several important factors to keep in mind. One of the most important credentials to have to pursue your education in Canada is a study permit.

What is a Canadian Study permit?

International students who plan to study in Canada must obtain a study permit, which is a document that allows them to begin their program of study in the country. It is important to note that study permits are only issued to students who are enrolled in a program of full-time studies for more than 6 months at a Designated Learning Institution (DLI). DLIs are educational institutions that have been approved by the government of Canada to offer study programs to international students.

In order to obtain a study permit, students must provide proof of acceptance from a DLI, as well as financial support to cover their tuition fees and living expenses while in Canada. They may also be required to undergo a medical examination and obtain a police certificate to demonstrate that they do not have a criminal record. It is important to carefully review and meet all the requirements for a study permit application to ensure a smooth process.

Who is eligible for a study permit?

To make your study abroad dream a reality in Canada, you need to comply with the following criteria:

Your college or university must be Designated Learning Institution (DLI #)
You should be able to prove enough funds to pay for: tuition fees, your living expenses, and accompanying family.
You must obey the law, get your police clearance indicating no criminal record
You should get a medical exam certifying that you are in good health
Most importantly, you must be able to prove in your application that you will leave Canada after the duration of your program.

By ensuring that you meet these requirements, you can increase your chances of being granted a study permit and successfully pursuing your academic goals in Canada.

How to identify a DLI?

A Designated Learning Institution (DLI) is a government-approved educational institution that hosts international students. However, not all DLIs and programs of study make you eligible to apply for Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP) if you plan to work after completing your studies. At AdmitSpot, we have Study Abroad Experts who can provide you with valuable information and answer all your questions related to DLIs and PGWP eligibility.
